TOEFL® Listening Tips

• Read the instructions and questions carefully before you listen to each task.
• For Task 1 (Listen and Choose a Response), focus on understanding the context and selecting the most natural reply.
• In Task 2 (Conversations), pay attention to both speakers and their relationship to answer multiple questions about the same audio.
• For Task 3 (Announcements and Academic Talks), listen for main ideas, supporting details, and speaker attitudes.
• Note taking is allowed and highly recommended for longer audio segments.
• Listen for 'signpost words' such as however, although, and finally to anticipate what the speaker will say next.
• Pay attention to speaker tone, emphasis, and pauses to understand attitudes and emotions.
• Practice with different accents as the new format may include various English accents.
• Use the transcript feature during practice to check your understanding and improve listening skills.
