Question 1

Many people think that students learn course materials more effectively by taking exams, while others think that students learn more effectively by doing other activities, like completing projects, which one do you think is more effective?
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:39

Well, I'd have to say that I feel students learn better by doing other activities than taking exams. For one, when I was a student, any time there was an exam coming up, I would cram. The day or two before test day, I would shove as much information into my short-term memory as possible, and then, after the exam, I would forget everything. Another reason for this opinion is that students learn in all sorts of ways, not just from taking tests. By doing other activities, like projects, students with alternative learning styles have a better chance of retaining the course materials. These are the reasons why I think students learn more effectively through other activities rather than exams.

Question 2

Some people believe that television has a negative impact on children and should be avoided. Others feel that television is one of many ways a child can learn. Which do you believe?
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:43

This is actually an interesting topic that I have discussed before with my friends. I disagree that TV negatively impacts kids and should therefore be avoided. First, there are many educational programs out there, especially for young children. I remember when I was younger, I was allowed to watch Dora the Explorer every day. From that show, I learned the foundations of the Spanish language. Secondly, while there are some programs that are not kid-friendly, the television is an invention that is never going to go away. Children should not be shunned from it, but rather taught how to use the TV responsibly. Embracing TV is the best way to prepare kids for adulthood, when they can spend their time watching whatever they want.

Question 3

Some people believe old people should not take risks and participate in adventurous events as the young people. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:47

I disagree with this statement. The assumption that old people should refrain from adventurous events and taking risks is an outdated stereotype and an ageist perception. Age does not necessarily dictate one's ability or enthusiasm to lead an adventurous life. It is a matter of personal preference, physical fitness, and mental robustness. Regardless of age, anyone with an adventurous spirit should have the freedom to partake in activities that excite them, of course, within their physical limits. Adventure keeps life vibrant and enriching at any age. Instead of discouraging elders from adventurous pursuits, we should inspire them to stay active and engaged. It not only improves their overall health but also keeps them mentally stimulated and increases their sense of well-being.

Question 4

You are planning to donate money to a charity and want it to have a major impact on people. Should you donate to a small local group or to a large international organization?
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:37

Hands down, I would donate my money to a small local group. For one, I think that local charities do more for my community. When I was growing up, my parents always had us volunteer during the summer with a group that repaired the homes of those less fortunate in our town. Of course, someone had to pay for the supplies and equipment, but we provided the labor. Not only did those people get remodeled houses to live in, but our overall community was improved. If I had to donate money instead of time, I would donate to a local charity like that one because I would be able to see the impact that I was making on a more local level.

Question 5

Do you prefer traveling alone or with friends and family? Please supply specific reasons to uphold your choice.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:37

I prefer traveling with family and friends and there are several reasons why. Firstly, I believe that shared moments result in wonderful memories. Sightseeing and exploring a new city, or even familiarizing oneself with a completely different way of life, are all great fun when experienced with the ones you love. Additionally, there's also the matter of safety. During my vacations, I feel more at ease having loved ones around me, which makes the travel experience more relaxed and enjoyable. Not to mention, being with companions often means splitting costs, which is another added benefit of traveling with family and friends.

Question 6

Do you prefer reading digital materials or hard copies? Explain your choice with sound reasoning.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:37

I strongly prefer to read hard copies and there are specific reasons for this view. Firstly, the physical act of flipping through pages provides me with a sense of progress as I read, something that is lacking when I read digital copies. This physical interaction turns into tactile reinforcement of my progress through any text, enhancing my reading experience. Also, reading hard copies is less straining on my eyes. Digital screens emit light which, in prolonged use, can cause discomfort and even headaches. I enjoy reading at my leisure, and these health concerns are significantly reduced when I read hard copies.

Question 7

Would you rather live in a busy city or in the countryside? Provide specific evidence to support your opinion.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:35

I would rather live in a busy city. While it's true that the countryside can provide a pace of life that's closer to nature and generally quieter, living in a city comes with several tangible benefits. For instance, in a city, all amenities are readily available, typically within walking distance. Cities provide a range of opportunities in terms of cultural experiences such as theatres, galleries, festivals which I hold in high esteem. Plus, living in the city leads to more social opportunities. Given that I thrive in social settings, city life is far more appealing to me.

Question 9

Do you prefer to write by hand or type on a computer? Please provide two or three reasons to support your preference.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:28

I prefer typing on a computer over writing by hand for a number of reasons. The main being that typing is faster. Considering my busy schedule, every saved minute helps. Additionally, typed documents look neater and are easier to read than handwritten ones. Also, digital documents are easier to store and retrieve. I can easily search and find what I need, instead of rummaging through heaps of papers when I need a specific document.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:32

Personally, I prefer outdoor activities during my free time. Firstly, getting out enables me to enjoy the open air and nature, which in turn helps me relax and de-stress. For instance, I enjoy hiking on weekends, amidst the mountains, which stay in perfect harmony with the sky above. Practicing such outdoor activities also provide opportunities for physical exercise, which in turn boosts my overall well-being. As such, despite the appeal of indoor activities like watching movies or cooking, I find outdoor activities the most rewarding.

Question 11

Do you prefer studying alone or in group study sessions? Please provide specific reasons and instances to support your answer.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:33

I prefer studying alone for various reasons. First and foremost, when I study alone, I can completely dictate my own study rhythm. When I need a break, I can take a break. When I need to spend more time on a difficult concept, I can. Another reason is that I can avoid distractions. Although group study sessions can be motivating, they tend to become social gatherings rather quickly. Therefore, I feel that studying alone fosters self-reliance and keeps my study schedule flexible and tailored to my needs.

Question 12

Do you prefer listening to music while studying or maintaining a quiet environment? Give details and examples to support your response.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:27

There are times when I enjoy working with music playing in the background, but generally, I prefer maintaining a quiet environment when studying. It allows me to concentrate better without auditory distractions. I have found that even instrumental music can cause my mind to wander at times. I believe that focused attention is crucial for depth of understanding, particularly with complex subject matters, thus, a noise-free environment best suits my study habits.

Question 13

Do you prefer learning new skills through watching tutorials or reading instructional guides? Explain your preference with appropriate examples and reasons.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:30

My preference leans towards learning new skills by watching tutorials. Visual information in the form of video tutorials helps me grasp procedures quicker as I can see real-time demonstrations of tasks being performed. For instance, when I was learning to bake, watching someone mix the ingredients and go through each step was easier to understand than reading instructions from a book. Thus, video tutorials provide a comprehensive, step-by-step visual guide that enhances my understanding and offers an effective learning experience.

Question 14

Do you prefer using public transportation or having a private vehicle for your daily commute? Provide specific reasons to support your answer.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:28

I prefer using public transportation for my daily commute. This is primarily because it allows me to navigate through the city without having to worry about finding parking spaces or dealing with heavy traffic. It also gives me a bit of spare time during my commute to read, listen to podcasts or to simply relax. Apart from these convenience factors, using public transportation is also a greener option, which reduces my carbon footprint; something I consider important.

Question 15

Do you prefer watching movies at home or in a cinema? Provide specific details to justify your preference.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:32

I prefer watching movies at home. One reason is that I feel more comfortable in my own space where I can pause the movie if I need a break or want a snack. Moreover, there's no concern over missing parts of the movie due to bathroom breaks or noisy crowds. With modern advancements in home entertainment systems, I do not miss the cinema experience as much, and an added advantage is that I can watch a film at any time that suits me. A cozy atmosphere, homemade snacks, and a flexible timeline make watching movies at home, the preferable option for me.

Question 16

Do you prefer doing frequent small assessments or having a major final test in a course? Support your preference with specific reasons.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:32

Personally, I would prefer having frequent small assessments over a single major final test. This approach continually reinforces what I've learned and helps me identify areas for improvement early on. Small assessments foster consistent studying, allow me to build up the skills and knowledge over time, and reduce the pressure and potential for mistakes that a single all-or-nothing exam presents. Moreover, small tests keep me engaged and accountable throughout the course, and better leverage the spacing effect, an evidence-based learning technique linked to long-term retention.

Question 17

Would you prefer working in a team or individually on major projects? Explain your choice with relevant examples.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:37

I would prefer working in a team on major projects. Teamwork encourages collaboration and the exchange of ideas, which I believe leads to a more comprehensive end result. There's a synergy that happens when people work together that you just don't get when working alone. Different people bring unique skills and perspectives, and when those are combined, the result is often innovative and effective. Furthermore, in my previous experiences, I valued the learning aspect of teamwork. When I worked on a team project in college, for instance, we each brought distinct skills to the table and we learned immensely from each other.

I would prefer using credit cards as opposed to cash. The first reason is because of convenience. I don't need to carry around a large amount of money, just one small card. Secondly, using a credit card is safer than carrying cash, as a lost or stolen card can easily be replaced, unlike lost cash. Lastly, credit cards often offer reward points, cash back, or other benefits for their use, incentivizing their use over cash.

I prefer traditional classroom learning over online courses. The physical classroom environment offers a level of engagement and social interaction that is vital to learning yet difficult to replicate online. In a classroom, I can directly ask questions, engage in discussions, and learn from peer input. Moreover, the consistent schedule of a classroom helps me stay disciplined and focused on my coursework. However, I do recognize the benefits of online courses, especially their flexibility, and I believe a mix of both would provide an ideal learning environment.

I prefer a relaxed environment at work. In my experience, a relaxed environment fosters innovation, creativity and encourages open communication among employees. When people feel comfortable, they are more likely to share ideas, collaborate and ask for feedback. In addition, job stress and pressure can have severe health consequences, including burnout. That being said, I understand occasional time-driven projects do create mild pressure, and that amount is manageable and can even increase productivity to a certain level.

Practical application makes learning more engaging and relatable as well. That being said, the theoretical knowledge provides a necessary foundation and structure for practical applications, and thus shouldn’t be neglected.

Question 24

Would you prefer a job that pays well, but involves long hours or a job with regular hours but less pay? Explain your choice with specific reasons.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:31

For me, a job with regular hours but less pay would be more appealing. While having a higher income can be enticing, working long hours often means sacrificing time for personal life, self-care, and relations, which for me is a higher priority. Regular hours offer a good work-life balance and more time for hobbies and family, contributing significantly to overall mental well-being and job satisfaction. Moreover, if I have regular hours, I might have more time for professional development opportunities, which could have long-term benefits for my career.

Question 25

Which of the following companies would you prefer to work for? A company that offers you challenging and interesting projects but very few vacation days, or a company that offers you a job with boring work each day, but long vacations each year.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:38

I would much rather have a boring job each day and longer vacations. First of all, I love to travel, so no matter what, I would want as many vacations as possible. When I was little, my mom worked for a company that offered few vacation days, so it was very unfortunate for our family because we hardly ever got away. Not only that, but I believe there are other things that can be interesting and exciting in your life besides your job. Even if work is boring, you can still have a good time with your friends and family or doing sports and hobbies in your free time. While interesting work projects would be nice too, they are certainly no substitution for long vacations every year.

Sample answer:

Without a doubt, I am the kind of person who prefers to stay in and relax. To be honest, I am an introvert, and I just don’t like meeting new people. Going to a party, meeting new people, and making small talk just sounds like a nightmare to me. I never know what to say. In addition to that, there is just something so comforting about spending an evening at home, relaxing. I have the most comfortable couch in my living room, and most nights I enjoy curling up with a good book or watching a movie with my dog. I love the peace and quiet. So, yeah, I would totally prefer to stay at home and relax.

Do you agree or disagree with the statement that female and male university students should have separate residence halls?
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:40

I disagree with the statement that female and male university students should have separate residence halls. I believe that having shared residence halls helps foster a climate of mutual respect and understanding. Co-ed living can serve as a reflection of real-world environments where both genders cohabitate, whether in the context of work or home settings. It also promotes diversity and can contribute to a student’s social and emotional development. Furthermore, gender should not be a basis for segregation, but should rather serve as a foundation for acceptance and unity within our society. Therefore, it is essential to encourage mixed-gender residence halls in universities.

Question 30

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The government should forbid violence and bad language in TV programs. Use specific reasons and examples in your answer.
Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:43

I certainly agree with this statement. In my opinion, the government should definitely regulate the content broadcasted on TV, particularly those featuring violence and bad language. This is because television plays a crucial role in molding the minds and behaviors of individuals, especially children who are highly susceptible to the influence of the media. Exposure to content with violence and bad language can desensitize them towards these negative behaviors, which normalizes it as part of societal interaction. Even for adults, such content can trigger violence or encourage the use of foul language. Hence, to safeguard moral and societal values, the government ought to play an active role in censoring TV programs.

Question 1

Conversation:
Campus Fitness Center to Close

The campus fitness center will permanently close at the end of this semester. This decision was made by the university administration in coordination with representatives of the student’s association. Unfortunately, the building currently housing the center is very old and the university can no longer afford the cost of maintaining it or providing heat and air conditioning as required. Furthermore, the popularity of the center has declined since the university formed partnerships with several private fitness centers in the city. These partnerships mean that all full and part time students can access five privately owned gyms across the city at no cost.

Listening:
0:00/ 1:17
Question:

The man expresses his opinion of the university’s plan. State his opinion and the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:36/span>

The man opposes this.To begin with, he points out that the university will still have to maintain the building even if the fitness center closes because it could become a dangerous fire hazard. On top of that, it will be very expensive to hire construction workers to tear down the building and replace it with something else. Moreover, he argues that all of the gyms in the city are quite far from the university, so it could be hard for students to reach them if they don’t have their own vehicle. The closest one is more than thirty minutes away by car. Additionally, it can be quite hard to find a taxi from campus into the city late at night.

Question 2

Conversation:
Increase Library Staff

The library is in desperate need of more staff. The librarians are so overworked and exhausted. They have to run around tired trying to help students, and everyone ends up waiting an extremely long time. The library gets backed-up and no one wins. Even though there are some student workers, they are not much use. They don’t know what they’re doing, so the librarians have to do all the work. The school should hire some more professional librarians to assist our busy and crowded library as soon as possible. Remember everyone, finals are just around the corner, and we need a functioning library before then! Sincerely, Tamara Schull

Listening:
0:00/ 1:11
Question:

The man expresses his opinion on the increase in library staff. State his opinion and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:45/span>

The student’s letter proposes an increased amount of staff working at the library. In it, the author notes that the library is too busy. She feels that the librarians are overworked and that the student workers do not have the necessary qualifications to help students. In response, the man in the conversation totally disagrees with the author. To start, he explains that the library is not busy most of the time. In fact, it is almost always empty. He says that it is only busy for an hour right after class. Secondly, he has talked with some of the student workers in the library, and he feels that they actually know more than the librarians. As you can see, the man clearly does not believe that the school needs to hire more librarians.

Question 3

Conversation:
Chemistry Department announcement

The Chemistry Department is planning to award scholarships to students who have received an average grade of 90% or above. We have found there to be a serious need for well-educated chemistry students and the current pool of chemists is highly lacking. By awarding these scholarships, it will allow future chemists to get a better handle on their tuition costs as well as encourage students to study harder in class. After the recent audit, we have found there to be plenty of funds for this department and we feel this is the best place to use them. Considering this school spends most of its funds on the Sports Department, we want to get students more interested in chemistry and we feel this is the best place to start.

Listening:
0:00/ 1:5
Question:

The woman expresses her opinion about the announcement. State her opinion and explain the reasons that she gives for holding that opinion.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:46/span>

The woman's opinion is that the chemistry department should prioritize updating their outdated equipment instead of spending school funding on scholarships. She believes that having outdated equipment puts students at a disadvantage when competing for positions in the industry, as most companies use updated equipment. She argues that it is important for students to be familiar with the latest equipment in order to succeed in their future careers. Additionally, she suggests that the department should consider rewarding current students who are already working hard, rather than focusing on attracting potential students. She believes that students who are achieving good grades in chemistry should be acknowledged and rewarded for their efforts. The woman believes that these changes would be more beneficial for the department and its students.

Question 4

Conversation:
Withdrawal from Classes

In order to qualify for a refund of 100 percent at any time during the semester you must first establish eligibility. Serious illness or injury must be verified by a written statement signed by a doctor or a psychologist. The death of a family member must be verified by a death certificate. Military duty must be verified by a copy of the orders. Students who wish to withdraw without submitting official documentation may do so before the end of the drop-add period without penalty. After the end of the second week of classes, students may petition for a 90 percent reimbursement. After the end of the fourth week, students are eligible for a 50 percent refund.

Listening:
0:00/ 1:1
Question:

The student expresses her opinion of the policy for reimbursement. Report her opinion and explain the reasons that she gives for having that opinion.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:46/span>

The student thinks that the policy for reimbursement is too strict and inflexible. She believes that every case should be evaluated individually and that there should be more options for students to withdraw and receive a full refund. In the conversation, she mentions a scenario where a student's mother is sick and needs care but is not dying. Under the current policy, the student would not be eligible for a refund if they drop out to help their family. The student argues that there should be a way to petition for eligibility and provide documentation for other valid reasons to withdraw. She thinks that some students will not be able to document their eligibility and will have to settle for a partial reimbursement. Therefore, she suggests adding a procedure for petitioning eligibility to the policy.

Close the Campus Coffee house

I propose that the university close the campus coffeehouse. Coffeehouses are great. if people actually use them, like to socialize with friends, while enjoying a cup of coffee and a snack. But students are not using our campus coffeehouse. There are usually lots of empty tables when I pass by the place. It is just a waste of space that could be used for other things. She likes the coffeehouse because it's never crowded, which makes it a great place for studying. She often goes there to read books or work on papers for class. She finds it quiet and prefers it to the library as a study spot. She also mentions that many other students study there, even for their final exams. Moreover, the woman mentions that the food at the coffeehouse has improved recently, with a new manager making delicious and healthy options available. Overall, she believes that the coffeehouse should not be closed because it serves as a convenient and productive place for students to work and study.

Question Three (Integrated Speaking)

Sample 1

Reading:
Read a passage from a university textbook about Convergent Evolution

Evolution is the process in which, over time, animals develop the characteristics required to survive in their natural environment. One form of this is convergent evolution, which is when animals living in completely separate geographic areas end up with many identical features. This occurs when the habitats of two creatures resemble each other in some way. Because they live in similar habitats, the animals end up needing similar specialties in order to survive and reproduce. In certain cases the animals are so alike that they may end up being mistaken for each other, while in other cases they only share a few features.

Listening:
0:00/ 1:44
Question:

Using the examples from the lecture, explain the concept of convergent evolution.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:43/span>

Convergent evolution is when animals living in different places end up with similar traits because they have to survive in similar environments. For example, pronghorns in North America and antelope in Africa both have fast legs and good eyesight because they live in open, grassy plains with few places to hide. Similarly, bats and dolphins, although very different animals, both use echolocation to find food because they live in dark environments where seeing is difficult. In these cases, animals from different regions developed similar characteristics because they needed them to survive in their particular habitats. So, convergent evolution shows how animals adapt to their surroundings in similar ways, even if they are from completely separate parts of the world.

Reading:
Read a passage about Ballads.

A ballad is a poem that tells a story and is sung to music. Usually, the story is of unknown origin, and a number of versions may be found for one song, a characteristic that stems from the oral tradition. As the song is passed on from one singer to another, a word is added or changed, or a slight alteration is made in the tune. In short, ballads represent a living tradition that evolves as the song is performed and passed to the nest musician. A collection of ballads has been preserved in written form in the volume English and Scottish Popular Ballads by Francis James Child, and many ballads are still referred to by their 'Child number.'

Listening:
0:00/ 1:23
Question:

Define a ballad, and then explain why 'Barbara Allen' can be classified as a ballad.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:41/span>

A ballad is a story in poem form that is sung to music and can have many different versions as it is passed down through generations. 'Barbara Allen' can be classified as a ballad because it tells a story about love, rejection, and death, and is sung to music. The song follows a traditional ballad structure with repeating lines and rhyming stanzas. Additionally, 'Barbara Allen' has many different versions, with variations of the story found in different countries. This shows that the song has been passed down through an oral tradition, with changes and additions made by different singers over time. In conclusion, 'Barbara Allen' fits the definition of a ballad because it is a story told in song that has evolved over time through oral tradition.

Environmental organizations work to protect plants and animals whose natural habitats are threatened by human activity. One way they do this is by selecting a particular species to represent the threatened habitat to the general public. This species, called a flagship species, is one that people are likely to find attractive and interesting. The flagship species is used to raise public awareness and motivate people to take action to protect the threatened habitat. People's support of the flagship species results in protection for all the plant and animal species living in the threatened area.

Question:

Using the example of the macaw from the lecture. explain the concept of a flagship species.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:39/span>

A flagship species is a specific plant or animal chosen to represent and bring attention to a larger ecosystem that is in danger. In the case of the Macaw, it was selected as the flagship species for the South American rainforest that was being threatened by deforestation. People found the Macaw attractive and interesting, so environmental organizations used it to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting the rainforest. By focusing on saving the Macaw's habitat, people were motivated to take action to help not only the bird but also the other species that lived in the same ecosystem. This approach helped to save the Macaw and restore the balance of the entire ecosystem.

Reading:
Read a passage about Entertainment merchandising

An effective, widely used marketing practice in the entertainment industry is entertainment merchandising. Entertainment merchandising Is a form of marketing In which the brand or image from one product is also used to sell another. The practice of entertainment merchandising often occurs in connection with movies and television shows, especially those associated with children. For example, the success of a popular children's television show may result in the marketing of toys that are designed to look like characters in the show. Or the situation may be reversed when a children's television show is written to include characters that are based on already-popular toys.

Question:

Using the examples from the lecture. explain the concept of entertainment merchandising.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:38/span>

Entertainment merchandising is when a popular character or brand from a TV show or movie is used to sell products like toys. For example, in the lecture, the Action Hero TV show led to toys being sold in stores. Kids who watched the show wanted to have the same toys as the characters they saw on TV. Similarly, the Rosa doll became popular because of a TV show featuring the doll as the main character. This shows how entertainment merchandising uses the popularity of a TV show or movie to sell related products. So, entertainment merchandising is all about using the connection between entertainment and products to make sales.

Reading:
Read a passage about Franchising

Many popular and well-known business chains, such as fast food restaurants, use a practice known as franchising. In franchising, someone who wants to open a store or restaurant pays an established company for the right to use the company's name and sell the company's products. Selling an established, in-demand product that has immediate name recognition benefits the new business by reducing the risk that the business will fail. In exchange. the new business agrees to follow all of the standard practices of the company with the name it wants to use.

Listening:
0:00/ 1:15
Question:

Using the example given by the professor, explain how franchising works.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:39/span>

Franchising is when a person wants to open a store or restaurant and pays an established company to use their name and sell their products. For example, if I want to open a pizza place, I can pay a big company like Pizza Town to use their name and sell their special pizza. This is good because people already know about Pizza Town and like their pizza, so my business is more likely to succeed. In return, I must follow all of Pizza Town's rules and ways of doing things. They will train me on how to make the pizza, run the business, and even how to advertise. This means I have less freedom, but it also means I have a better chance of being successful because Pizza Town's way usually works.

Question:

According to the professor, in which brain processes is the hippocampus involved? Include points and examples from the lecture.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 1:5/span>

According to the professor, the hippocampus, located in the medial temporal lobe of the brain, is involved in various brain processes, particularly in memory formation. One of the key functions of the hippocampus is in the consolidation stage of memory encoding, where it transforms short-term memories into long-term ones. This is achieved by strengthening neural connections between different brain parts, which makes it easier to recall information later. The professor also mentioned that the hippocampus is activated in encoding memories spatially or temporally related, i.e., memories related to navigation or learning sequences of events. The example given in the lecture was exploring a new environment or grasping a novel series of occurrences. Furthermore, the hippocampus is also involved in memory retrieval but in a more intricate way. The professor proposed a theory wherein the hippocampus functions like a relational database, connecting different bits of information to retrieve a full memory. When we recall memories comprising various pieces of information like a person's name, appearance, and job, the hippocampus is activated.

What did Realism try to depict? Include points and examples from the lecture.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:46/span>

Realism tried to show the world as it really is, with all its imperfections and flaws, instead of portraying an idealized version. The movement focused on portraying the human experience in a more truthful and realistic way. Realist writers wanted to capture their characters' internal lives, revealing their thoughts, feelings, and motivations in a more complex manner. They believed that individuals are influenced by their surroundings and experiences, as well as the social, economic, and political forces of their time. Unlike romantic literature, realist characters were not one-dimensional and had conflicting emotions, motivations, and desires. Realism aimed to show the human condition in all its complexities by focusing on the individual as a distinct and multifaceted character.

Using the example of the cuckoo bird from the lecture, explain two ways in which egg mimicry is beneficial for birds.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:49/span>

In the listening, the lecturer discusses a practice among cuckoo birds called egg mimicry. Cuckoos lay eggs that look the same as other birds’ eggs in size and color. The mother cuckoo lays her eggs in another birds’ nest, so that bird can’t tell the difference between her own eggs and the cuckoo’s. According to the lecturer, this practice has two advantages. First, when the baby cuckoo birds are born, the host bird raises it like its own. The baby cuckoo is provided with a home in the nest and food from their adopted mom. But also, there is an advantage to the other baby birds too, and that is protection. Should a predator try to come for the nest while the mother bird is away, the cuckoo will release a smell that wards off the predator. After hearing this talk, I now have a better understanding of egg mimicry.

Question:

Using points and details from the talk, explain what equity compensation is, and why companies might offer it to employees.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:43/span>

Equity compensation is a method where employees get ownership in the company through shares or stocks on top of their regular salary. Companies might offer this to employees to prevent them from leaving, as staff turnover is costly and time-consuming. By offering equity, employees are more likely to stay with the company long-term and work harder to ensure its success. This could lead to higher profits for the company in the long run. Additionally, employees who own stock in the company may promote it through social media or word-of-mouth, which can also benefit the business. In essence, equity-based compensation can help companies save money on training and turnover costs, while also motivating employees to contribute to the company's growth and success.

Question:

Using the main points and examples from the lecture, describe the kind of information that ultrasound can provide, and then explain the way that ultrasound is used in medical diagnosis.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:40/span>

Ultrasound is a medical tool that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images inside the body. It can provide important information to doctors, such as whether a tumor is present or to monitor the growth of a fetus during pregnancy. The sound waves are produced by a crystal that moves quickly back and forth, and these waves are transmitted into the body by a device placed on the skin. The sound waves then bounce off organs and tissues inside the body, creating patterns that are processed by a computer to produce an image on a screen. This image helps doctors to see inside the body and detect any abnormalities or issues that may be present, making ultrasound an important tool in medical diagnosis.

Question:

Using the examples from the lecture. discuss two types of narrators that an author of fiction might use.

Sample answer:
0:00/ 0:46/span>

In the lecture, the speaker talks about two different types of narrators that authors can use in their stories. The first type is an objective narrator, who only describes what the characters do and say without giving any extra information. For example, in a story about a man and woman on a trip, an objective narrator would only tell us that they get on a train and look out the window. This leaves us to interpret the events and understand the characters' actions on our own. The second type is an omniscient narrator, who knows everything about the characters, including their thoughts and feelings. In the same story, an omniscient narrator would tell us that the man is nervous about seeing his friend. So, these two types of narrators can give readers different perspectives and help them understand the story in different ways.
