At A1, A2, B1 and B2 two formats of the listening and reading papers are still in official circulation, and you find out which one you have on the day. Format 1 is the newer design: multiple choice only, with more and shorter documents. Format 2 is the older design, with multiple choice plus short written answers and, from A2, true/false items you must justify with a quotation. FEI states that neither format makes the exam easier or harder.

DALF C1 Reading

50 minutes, /25, one exercise on a literary or journalistic "texte d'idées" of about 1,000 words. The official sample has 12 questions: multiple choice, open questions including "in your own words", and four true/false items to justify (2 points each, all or nothing).

DALF C2: Reading Inside the Written Paper

DALF C2 has no separate reading paper. The collective paper "compréhension et production écrites" (3 h 30, /50) gives you a dossier of about 2,000 words (articles, cartoons, visuals) on one theme; your reading is shown in the 700-word text you write from it. See the writing page.

How to Approach It

  • Read the questions first, then the document: most questions follow the order of the text.
  • At A2 exercise 1 and B1 exercise 1, check every criterion against every document; do not stop at the first match.
  • At B2 exercise 3, decide who holds each view from their reasons, not from shared vocabulary.
  • In format 2 and at C1, "in your own words" means rephrasing; copying the text loses the points.

Practice documents with answers are on the reading samples page.
