The speaking section is the first part of the PTE Academic test. You'll have about 30-35 minutes to complete 6 different task types. Remember that you must do more than speak! Throughout the PTE speaking section you'll read, listen and speak. Read on for descriptions of each question and tips for mastering them.

Task 1 – Read Aloud

PTE Speaking Task 1 is the Read Aloud task. You will see a text on screen and have 40 seconds to read it aloud as naturally and clearly as possible. The text is usually 60-80 words long and covers academic topics.

Tips for success:

  • Read the text silently first to understand the content
  • Speak at a natural pace with proper pronunciation
  • Use appropriate intonation and stress
  • Don't rush - you have 40 seconds
  • Practice with academic texts regularly

Task 2 – Repeat Sentence

In this task, you will hear a sentence and need to repeat it exactly as you heard it. You have 15 seconds to repeat the sentence after hearing it once. The sentences are usually 10-20 words long.

Tips for success:

  • Listen carefully to the entire sentence
  • Focus on accuracy rather than speed
  • Pay attention to pronunciation and intonation
  • Practice with various sentence structures
  • Don't panic if you miss a word - continue naturally

You will see an image (graph, chart, map, diagram, or photograph) and have 40 seconds to describe it in detail. You have 25 seconds to study the image before the recording starts.

Tips for success:

  • Start with an overview of what the image shows
  • Describe key features, trends, and details
  • Use appropriate vocabulary for different image types
  • Speak for the full 40 seconds
  • Use linking words to connect ideas

Task 4 – Re-tell Lecture

You will hear a lecture (60-90 seconds) and then have 40 seconds to retell the lecture in your own words. You can take notes while listening.

Tips for success:

  • Take notes on main points and supporting details
  • Focus on the overall message and key information
  • Structure your response with introduction, main points, and conclusion
  • Use your own words, not exact phrases from the lecture
  • Practice with academic lectures on various topics

Task 5 – Summarize Group Discussion

You will hear a group discussion (60-90 seconds) and then have 40 seconds to summarize the main points and different opinions expressed. You can take notes while listening to the discussion.

  • Focus on the most important arguments and conclusions

Task 6 – Respond to a Situation

PTE Speaking Scoring

Your PTE Speaking score is based on three factors:

  • Content: How well you address the task requirements
  • Oral Fluency: Your speaking pace, rhythm, and flow
  • Pronunciation: How clearly and accurately you speak
