Goethe-Zertifikat Hören (Listening)

Hören is the listening module of the Goethe-Zertifikat. What matters most is how often you hear each recording, and that changes from Teil to Teil: some are played twice, some only once, and at C1 one discussion is cut into four sections you hear once each. The tables below give the play count and the reading time for every Teil at every level.

How to Approach the Module

  • Read the questions first. The A1 and A2 papers tell you to read the task first and then listen (“Lesen Sie zuerst …, hören Sie dann den Text dazu”). From B1 there is a fixed reading time before most Teile (60 or 90 seconds; 30 seconds per section at C1 Teil 3).
  • Know which Teile you hear once. On a once-only Teil, answer as you listen and do not wait for a repeat.
  • Who says what. B1 Teil 4, B2 Teil 3, C1 Teil 1 and C2 Teil 2 ask you to attribute statements to a speaker or a book. Note who is speaking as the voices change.
  • Transfer time is paper only. On paper you get a few minutes to copy answers to the answer sheet (A1 about 3, B1 and B2 5, C2 3 minutes); in the digital exam you answer on screen directly.

Practice and Next Steps

Sample tasks with answers or model answers are on the Goethe Hören samples page. How points are counted and converted is on the Goethe Hören scoring page, and common questions are answered in the Hören FAQ. The whole exam is summarised on the Goethe-Zertifikat format page.
