Goethe-Zertifikat: Test Format

The Goethe-Zertifikat is the Goethe-Institut’s German exam, with one exam for each CEFR level from A1 to C2. Every level tests the same four modules — Lesen (reading), Hören (listening), Schreiben (writing) and Sprechen (speaking) — but the tasks, the timing and the way the result is put together change from level to level. This page covers the adult versions of all six exams.

Lesen, Hören and Schreiben are written; Sprechen is an oral exam with two examiners. The exam is offered on paper at a test centre, digitally at a test centre (Lesen, Hören and Schreiben on a centre laptop with a German keyboard, Hören through headphones, answers typed and changeable until the module is submitted or the time ends) and online at home under set conditions. Structure, content and rating are identical in all three formats. In the digital format, Sprechen stays face to face.

The Fit in Deutsch and Jugendliche versions for younger candidates (A1 Fit 1, A2 Fit, B1 and B2 Jugendliche) are not covered here.

How the Scoring Works

A1 and A2 are single exams scored out of 100. At A1 each of the four parts has 15 raw points, multiplied by 1.66 to 25; the written parts give 75 points and Sprechen 25. At A2 Lesen, Hören and Schreiben each have 20 raw points multiplied by 1.25 to 25, and Sprechen is worth 25.

B1 to C2 are modular: each module is scored out of 100 on its own. At B1, B2 and C1 Lesen and Hören have 30 items and the raw score is multiplied by 3.33; at C2 the items carry different weights. Schreiben and Sprechen are rated by two examiners against fixed criteria.

Exam Day Rules

  • No dictionaries and no phones, at any level.
  • The Lesen and Hören Teile open with an example item 0, which is not scored.
  • At B1 there are breaks of at least 15 minutes between the written modules.
  • On paper there is extra time to transfer listening answers to the answer sheet; in the digital exam answers are entered directly.

How to Prepare

  1. Pick the level you can pass. Each level is its own exam with its own tasks and its own pass mark of 60.
  2. Learn each Teil’s task type. The Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen pages describe every Teil at every level.
  3. Practise with real task formats. The Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen samples pages have tasks with answers and model answers.
  4. Rehearse under exam timing. Use the Goethe practice section for single Teile and the Goethe mock tests for full modules, scored by AI trained by our experts.
