Goethe-Zertifikat Sprechen (Speaking)

Sprechen is the speaking module of the Goethe-Zertifikat. Its format changes more than any other module: A1 is a group exam, A2 to C1 are pair exams, and C2 is an individual exam with the examiner as your discussion partner. From B1 you get preparation time once for the whole module and may take notes.

How to Approach the Module

  • Interaction counts. From A2 most Teile are done with a partner, and at B1, B2 and C1 interaction is a rated criterion in the planning and discussion Teile. React to what your partner says rather than delivering a prepared monologue.
  • Follow the structure you are given. The B1 presentation has five slides; the B2 and C1 talks have three or four bullet points. Covering all of them is what earns the top task-fulfilment band.
  • Use the preparation time for notes, not a script. Notes are allowed from B1; you speak from them, not read them out.
  • Pronunciation is scored separately from A2 upwards (5 of 25 points at A2, 16 of 100 at B1–C1, one of five criteria at C2).

Practice and Next Steps

Sample tasks with answers or model answers are on the Goethe Sprechen samples page. How points are counted and converted is on the Goethe Sprechen scoring page, and common questions are answered in the Sprechen FAQ. The whole exam is summarised on the Goethe-Zertifikat format page.
