Goethe-Zertifikat Lesen (Reading)

Lesen is the reading module of the Goethe-Zertifikat. It grows from three short Teile in 25 minutes at A1 to four long texts in 80 minutes at C2, but the logic stays the same: every item is a closed question (true/false, multiple choice or matching) worth a fixed number of points, and the Teile start with an example item 0 that is not scored.

How to Approach the Module

  • Read the task before the text. The instructions tell you what you are looking for: a true/false decision, the right ad for a person, or which of several people holds an opinion.
  • Use the example. Item 0 shows how the answer is marked and, in matching tasks, uses up one option: in A2 Teil 4 and B1 Teil 3 the ad from the example cannot be chosen again.
  • Expect options that fit nothing. Many matching Teile have extra options or an item without a solution: A2 Teil 4 (mark X), B1 Teil 3 (answer 0), B2 Teile 2, 4 and 5, C1 Teile 3 and 4, C2 Teile 2 and 3.
  • Manage your own clock. From B1 the booklet prints a working time per Teil, but the module time is shared; time you save on one Teil can be used on another.

Practice and Next Steps

Sample tasks with answers or model answers are on the Goethe Lesen samples page. How points are counted and converted is on the Goethe Lesen scoring page, and common questions are answered in the Lesen FAQ. The whole exam is summarised on the Goethe-Zertifikat format page.
