Everything you need to know about the 0–120 scale, the CEFR conversion table, and how the "Writing for an Academic Discussion" task is scored.

The Basics: How is the TOEFL Scored?

Even with the updated shorter format, the TOEFL iBT scoring scale remains unchanged in 2026. The test is scored on a scale of 0 to 120.

0–30 Reading
0–30 Listening
0–30 Speaking
0–30 Writing
Note on the new format: The test is shorter (under 2 hours), but the final score report looks exactly the same as previous years, so universities do not need to change admission requirements.

TOEFL Score vs. CEFR Levels (Official ETS Table)

Universities often ask for a specific CEFR level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The table below shows how your TOEFL scores map to these international standards.

Use this table to determine if your score meets the B2 or C1 requirement common in Europe and the UK.

CEFR Level Reading Listening Speaking Writing Total Score (Approx)
C2 (Proficient) 29–30 28–30 28–30 29–30 114–120
C1 (Advanced) 24–28 22–27 25–27 24–28 95–113
B2 (High Intermediate) 18–23 17–21 20–24 17–23 72–94
B1 (Intermediate) 4–17 9–16 16–19 13–16 42–71

Performance Descriptors (2026 Update)

Your score report doesn’t just give a number; it classifies your skill level. This helps you identify strengths and areas to improve.

Writing Section (Academic Discussion)

With the removal of the Independent Task, the writing section is now graded on your ability to contribute to an academic conversation. Scoring levels:

  • Advanced (24–30): Clear, well-organized explanations with precise vocabulary.
  • High-Intermediate (17–23): Main ideas are clear, with minor grammar issues or limited elaboration.
  • Low-Intermediate (13–16): Simple sentences with limited development.

Speaking Section

  • Advanced (25–30): Fluent speech with minor pauses and clear intonation.
  • High-Intermediate (20–24): Mostly clear, with occasional hesitation on complex ideas.

What is a "Good" TOEFL Score in 2026?

There is no pass or fail. Typical benchmarks for university admissions:

  • Top Tier (Ivy League, Oxford, etc.): 100+ (often with 25+ in every section).
  • Standard Universities: 80–90.
  • Community Colleges / Foundation Years: 60–75.
Pro Tip: Always check if your university accepts MyBest® Scores. This creates a "superscore" by combining your highest section scores from all tests taken in the last 2 years.
