Scoring & Evaluation

The TOEIC Writing test is scored by human raters (often assisted by automated scoring engines). Scores are reported on a scaled range of 0–200.

  • High Proficiency (Level 8–9): Communicates effectively across topics, uses complex grammar with minor errors, and organizes ideas logically.
  • Mid Proficiency (Level 5–7): Conveys main ideas but may struggle with complex structures, vocabulary range, or flow.
  • Low Proficiency (Level 1–4): Struggles with sentence accuracy, vocabulary range, or task completion.

Key Tips for Success

  1. Follow the instructions: If the prompt asks for two questions and you write only one, your score drops significantly.
  2. Word count matters: Aim for 300–400 words in the essay to fully develop ideas.
  3. Proofread: Save the last 2–3 minutes of the essay task to check for typos and grammar issues.
