The reading section is the third part of the PTE Academic test. You'll have about 32-41 minutes to complete 5 different task types. The reading section tests your ability to understand written English in an academic context. Read on for descriptions of each task and tips for mastering them.

Task 1 – Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks

You will see a text with several blanks. For each blank, you need to choose the correct word from a dropdown menu. This task tests both reading and writing skills as it contributes to both scores.

Tips for success:

  • Read the entire text first to understand the context
  • Consider both grammar and meaning when choosing words
  • Look for clues in surrounding sentences
  • Pay attention to word forms (noun, verb, adjective, etc.)
  • Use process of elimination for difficult choices

Task 2 – Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers)

You will read a passage and answer a multiple-choice question where more than one answer may be correct. You need to select all correct options to receive full marks.

Tips for success:

  • Read the question carefully before reading the passage
  • Look for specific information mentioned in the options
  • Eliminate obviously incorrect answers first
  • Select all options that are supported by the text
  • Don't select options based on general knowledge alone

Task 3 – Re-order Paragraphs

You will see several text boxes containing sentences from a paragraph. You need to arrange them in the correct order to form a coherent paragraph.

Tips for success:

  • Look for topic sentences that introduce the main idea
  • Identify transition words and connecting phrases
  • Follow the logical flow of ideas
  • Look for pronouns that refer to previously mentioned concepts
  • Consider the overall structure and coherence

Task 4 – Reading Fill in the Blanks

You will see a text with several blanks. For each blank, you need to drag and drop the correct word from a list of options. This task tests only reading skills.

Tips for success:

  • Read the entire text to understand the context
  • Consider the meaning and grammar of each blank
  • Look for collocations and word partnerships
  • Use context clues from surrounding sentences
  • Check that your choices make sense in the complete text

Task 5 – Multiple Choice (Single Answer)

You will read a passage and answer a multiple-choice question with only one correct answer. This is similar to Task 2 but with single selection.

Tips for success:

  • Read the question and options before reading the passage
  • Scan the passage for relevant information
  • Eliminate obviously wrong answers
  • Choose the option that best answers the question
  • Base your answer on information in the passage, not outside knowledge

PTE Reading Scoring

Your PTE Reading score is based on:

  • Correct Answers: Each correct answer contributes to your score
  • Partial Credit: Some tasks offer partial credit for partially correct answers
  • Cross-Skill Scoring: Some tasks contribute to both Reading and Writing scores
  • No Negative Marking: Incorrect answers don't reduce your score

Practice with various text types and question formats to improve your reading comprehension and test performance.
