The writing section is the second part of the PTE Academic test. You'll have about 40 minutes to complete 2 different task types. The writing section tests your ability to write clearly, coherently, and accurately in an academic context. Read on for descriptions of each task and tips for mastering them.

Task 1 – Summarize Written Text

In this task, you will read a passage of 150-300 words and write a summary in one sentence. You have 10 minutes to complete this task. The passage covers academic topics and you need to capture the main idea and key points.

Requirements:

  • Write 5-75 words in a single sentence
  • Capture the main idea and key supporting points
  • Use your own words, not copy from the passage
  • Write in complete, grammatically correct sentences
  • Focus on content accuracy and clarity

Tips for success:

  • Read the entire passage first to understand the main idea
  • Identify key supporting points and examples
  • Use complex sentence structures with appropriate connectors
  • Aim for 30-50 words for optimal scoring

Task 2 – Write Essay

You will be given a topic and asked to write an essay expressing your opinion or discussing a given issue. You have 20 minutes to plan, write, and revise your essay. The topic is usually related to current issues, education, or general knowledge.

Requirements:

  • Write 200-300 words
  • Express your opinion clearly and support it with examples
  • Use appropriate academic vocabulary and grammar
  • Structure your essay with introduction, body, and conclusion
  • Address the topic completely and coherently

Tips for success:

  • Spend 2-3 minutes planning your essay structure
  • Use a clear thesis statement in your introduction
  • Develop 2-3 main points with supporting examples
  • Use linking words to connect ideas smoothly
  • Leave 2-3 minutes for proofreading and revision

PTE Writing Scoring

Your PTE Writing score is based on five factors:

  • Content: How well you address the task requirements and develop your ideas
  • Form: Whether you meet the word count requirements and follow instructions
  • Grammar: Accuracy of grammar, sentence structure, and language use
  • Vocabulary: Range and appropriateness of vocabulary used
  • Spelling: Accuracy of spelling and punctuation

Writing Strategies

For Summarize Written Text:
